Our Facilities
Our facilities at Ghyll Head are second to none. During 2021 the centre received over £1.5 million of investment, including the upgrading of the accommodation in the main house and ancillary facilities. We're excited for visitors past and present, new and old, to see the amazing refurbishment that has been carried out. The feedback to date has been tremendous!
Our 17 acres of private grounds are put to great use. From team games on the lawn to string trails through mature oak woods. We have a meandering wheelchair-accessible path to take you through the grounds and woods to our view point and fire pit. We have an accessible tipi for winter evening camp fires, marshmallow toasting and camp fire sing songs, where the atmosphere is fantastic!

Our accessible climbing tower gives a range of climbing challenges and is the launch point of our accessible zip wire. Hidden in the woods is an 'All-Aboard' challenge, where four students climb and stand together on what looks like a small bird table on top of a 10 metre pole. A low ropes challenge course and a range of problem solving challenges are scattered in the grounds to form part of the team-building process.
Ghyll Head House
The main house is the central hub at Ghyll Head. Bursting with traditional lakeside character, it is ideal for larger groups with a 54-bed allocation, dining area and social spaces ideal for quiet time, learning and indoor activities. The main house is fully catered and the team will work with you to ensure all your dietary needs are met. The house hosts the main kit store and large drying area. Larger groups can book the Main House, Bungalow and the Lodge to give a total capacity of 87 beds on site.
The Bungalow
The purpose-built bungalow offers modern facilities and is ideal for smaller groups, family stays and groups with additional needs. The Bungalow has 23 beds with a self catering option for visitors as well as catered. The Bungalow has the most breath-taking views across Windermere, Coniston and Langdale. Situated only a few minutes' stroll from the main house. It is also possible to offer a combination of Bungalow and camping during the summer months to increase the possible group size of your course.
The Bunkhouse
With an amazing view across Windermere and to the Coniston fells, the Bunkhouse is a new facility comprising of 3 bedrooms and one bathroom. The Bunkhouse can be hired alongside the Bungalow or House to expand the capacity giving an extra 14 places. This facility is also available on occasion as a stand alone booking ideal for a small family booking. Please note are no communal or kitchen facilities when hiring this building as a standalone booking. To check on availability please email ghyllhead@gll.org
Windermere Boathouse
We have direct access to England's largest lake and have a range of water craft to suit all abilities including two specialist access dinghies. We have three safety boats and provide you with wet suits and all the safety kit you need. Our stunning cedar-clad boathouse is only a five-minute walk from the centre and has modern accessible facilities giving all students access for to the lake, jetties and showers. It boasts an equipped classroom with spectacular lake views. A lift through the building gives access to the ground floor and jetties where a hoist transfers those with mobility difficulties onto water craft.
New! The Hive Pod Village
Our brand new Hive Pod village has nine modern, heated wooden PODs. The PODs are located in their own discrete area within the Ghyll Head grounds and are serviced by a facility block that includes toilets, showers and small kitchen area. In addition, there is a group room available - The Buzz Relaxation Area - that can be used. Ideal for organisations taking multiple POD bookings.
The Hive can be block booked by groups and schools - just speak to one of our team about it when you're planning your visit.
